"Flu" Rules Are Issued

• Dr. Parrish issued rules to stop crowding in stores and theaters in downtown Portland. • Rules: o Theaters can only accept as many customers as the seating capacity affords.o Elevators may only be filled to half capacity. o Theaters and department stores are to be kept between 68 and 70 degrees. o The aisles in department stores should be kept clear. o Every day store employees should be checked for illness. If they are ill they should be sent home immediately. o Any person who coughs, sneezes, or has a cold should be sent home. o Doctors should place influenza cards on houses where influenza is present. o Patients should be isolated and only one family member should attend to them. o All should “study and obey” the card of instruction that was distributed by the health bureau. • More drastic rules are not expected but if the conditions do not improve, the old closure order may be reinstated. • A closure order at this time would cause a large amount of economic loss and authorities are trying to avoid this step. They are hoping that the public will be cautious and keep the disease at bay. • Total for the four days so far this week: 729 cases; 49 deaths• There have been 603 deaths total during the epidemic.Newspaper article1
